The Coconut Water Tourist Trap

Don’t let the headline deceive you, it’s not really premium coconut water. Premium taste but the price doesn’t make sense.

Is the price of coconut water regulated?

Ha..nope.

The vendors decide to charge a price based on the direction that the wind blows [mostly from the West..that’s a joke].

Here is what really happens - the vendors go into the “country side“ or the rural parts of Barbados, pick the coconuts and then decide where on streets they want to “set up shop.” The West Coast is known for having pricier retail on everything but coconuts being twice the price is where the line needs to be drawn in the sand [no pun intended].

Coconuts can be as high as BDS$6 while other parts of the country sell for half the price.

You can also opt for a half gallon of coconut water but you miss out on the coconut jelly.

If you are staying on the South coast in St. Michael or Christ Church and have purchased coconuts..

….you have probably been quoted on average BDS $3

….that Barbados rarely exports it’s abundance of fresh coconuts.
